Abacavir is an antiretroviral medication widely used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Belonging to the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) class, abacavir works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, crucial for the replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is often included as part of combination therapy, known as antiretroviral therapy (ART), to enhance treatment efficacy and reduce the risk of drug resistance.
