Chikungunya

Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV), belonging to the Alphavirus genus. Transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, chikungunya is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. The virus has gained global attention due to its ability to cause large-scale outbreaks and its expanding geographic distribution. The clinical manifestations of chikungunya include sudden onset of fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and rash. While the disease is rarely fatal, the joint pain can be debilitating and persist for months, affecting the quality of life for those affected. The elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions may experience more severe complications. Preventive measures focus on mosquito control and personal protection against mosquito bites, including the use of insect repellents and protective clothing. There is no specific antiviral treatment for chikungunya, with management primarily addressing symptoms, such as pain relief and hydration.
