Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory condition characterized by persistent airflow limitation, primarily associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The main contributors to COPD are long-term exposure to harmful gases or particulate matter, most commonly from cigarette smoke. The condition often manifests after years of exposure, with symptoms including cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath. COPD significantly impacts lung function, causing a gradual decline in respiratory capacity. This decline results in impaired airflow and difficulty exhaling, leading to increased breathlessness over time. The disease has a profound impact on daily life, affecting activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and even routine tasks like dressing and eating. Management of COPD involves a multidisciplinary approach, including smoking cessation, bronchodilator medications, and pulmonary rehabilitation. In severe cases, supplemental oxygen therapy or surgical interventions like lung transplantation may be considered. COPD's socio-economic burden is substantial, with a significant impact on healthcare resources due to hospitalizations and outpatient care. Public health efforts focus on prevention through smoking cessation programs, air quality improvement, and early detection through spirometry testing. These measures aim to reduce the incidence of COPD, enhance patient outcomes, and alleviate the economic burden associated with this debilitating respiratory condition.
